What to Pack for Santorini: A Carry-On Only List
A carry-on packing list for Santorini built around its real monthly weather, its steep caldera stairs and the bag rules of the airlines that fly you there.

Santorini is one of the easiest places in Europe to visit with just a carry-on, and one of the places where you'll be happiest you did. The villages on the caldera rim are built on stairs, many hotels can't be reached by car, and ferries and small planes don't love big suitcases. This list keeps you light without leaving anything important at home.
Santorini weather by month
Santorini has a dry, sunny summer and a mild, windier winter. In July the average high is 82°F (28°C), and it almost never rains: about 0.0 in (1 mm) for the whole month. In spring and autumn it's still warm in the sun, but evenings cool off quickly on the cliffs.

What that means for packing:
- June to September: pack for heat and sun. Light layers, a hat, and one thin layer for windy sunset spots.
- April, May and October: days around 71°F (22°C) in May and 71°F (22°C) in October. Add a light sweater or jacket for evenings.
- November to March: many hotels and restaurants close. If you go, pack a warm layer and a rain jacket.

The carry-on packing list
This list fits in a standard carry-on plus a small bag under the seat, for a week in summer.
Clothes
- 4 to 5 light tops (linen and cotton dry fast in the sun)
- 1 to 2 pairs of shorts or a skirt
- 1 pair of light trousers or a maxi dress for dinner
- 1 light layer for windy sunsets (a thin cardigan, shirt or jacket)
- 2 swimsuits, so one can dry
- Underwear and socks for 5 to 7 days (you can wash a few things)
Shoes
- Walking sandals or sneakers with good grip. The marble paths in Oia and Fira get slippery, and there are hundreds of steps down to the old ports.
- Flip-flops for the beach and the pool
Sun and beach
- Sun hat and sunglasses
- Sunscreen (in a bottle of 100 ml / 3.4 oz or less if it goes in your carry-on)
- A light beach cover-up or sarong
- A small foldable tote for the beach
Bits that make the trip easier
- A crossbody bag with a zip, for busy sunset crowds
- Refillable water bottle (it's hot on the caldera paths)
- Phone power bank (in your carry-on, never in checked bags)
- Plug adapter for Greece (type C / F)

What to wear at the famous spots
- Oia at sunset: it gets very crowded and the wind can pick up after the sun goes down. Bring your light layer and keep your bag in front of you.
- The Fira to Oia walk: about 10 km on rough paths with little shade. Wear real walking shoes, bring water, and start early in summer.
- Churches: you may be asked to cover your shoulders and knees. A sarong or light scarf in your bag is enough.

Will your bag fit the flight?
Most visitors fly to Santorini through Athens or straight from another European city, often on a low-cost airline. That matters more than anything on this list.
Low-cost airlines like Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air only include a small bag that fits under the seat. A full-size carry-on is a paid extra on all three. Book it online, because paying at the gate costs much more.
If you want one carry-on that works on every European airline we track, aim for **55 x 35 x 20 cm (21.7 x 13.8 x 7.9 in)** or smaller, and keep it under the weight limit. Several European airlines weigh cabin bags, and the limits run from 8 to 12 kg (18 to 26 lb).
You can check your own bag against every airline at once with the bag size checker, or see all limits on the Europe carry-on page.
Quick tips
- Pack less than you think. You'll live in the same two pairs of shorts, a swimsuit and sandals.
- Wash and repeat. Clothes dry in an hour in the summer sun.
- Keep liquids small. Buy sunscreen there if your liquids bag is full.
- Leave room for a souvenir. Santorini wine and local capers travel well, but bottles must go in checked bags or be bought after security.
