How it works

Every airline publishes a maximum size for each side of your bag. A bag has to fit the strictest number on each side, so we line up the limits, longest side first, and take the smallest one for each. Some airlines also set a total (length + width + height) or a weight limit, and the lowest of those counts too.

All limits come from the airlines' own websites, the same data as our bag checker and carry-on size chart. Want to check a bag you already own? Use the bag checker.

Questions people ask

What size carry-on fits every airline on my trip?

Take each airline's limit, then the smallest number on each side: the shortest height, the narrowest width and the thinnest depth. A bag within all three fits every airline. Weight works the same way: the lowest limit wins. This tool does it for you and shows which airline sets each limit.

Why does one airline decide my whole bag size?

Because you have to board every flight with the same bag. If one leg is on a low-cost airline with a 20 cm depth limit, your bag has to be 20 cm deep even on airlines that allow more.

Is there one carry-on size that fits all European airlines?

For the European airlines we track, the largest carry-on within every limit is 55 x 35 x 20 cm (21.7 x 13.8 x 7.9 in). Low-cost airlines may still charge for a carry-on of that size on their cheapest fares.
