What to Pack for New York City in Any Season

What that means for packing:
- Spring (April and May): highs from 60°F (16°C) to 70°F (21°C). A light jacket, layers and an umbrella.
- Summer (June to August): hot and sticky. Light, breathable clothes. Bring one layer for strong air conditioning indoors.
- Fall (September to November): often the best weather. Highs of 66°F (19°C) in October. A sweater and a light coat.
- Winter (December to March): cold and windy between tall buildings. A warm coat, hat, gloves and waterproof boots.

The carry-on packing list
For a long weekend to a week in the fall:
Clothes
- 1 coat or jacket for the season (wear it on the plane)
- 1 or 2 sweaters
- 4 to 5 tops
- 2 pairs of jeans or trousers
- 1 smarter outfit for a show or a nice dinner
- Underwear, socks and sleepwear
Shoes
- Comfortable sneakers. This is the most important item on the list.
- Ankle boots or smarter shoes, only if you'll really wear them
Day bag
- A crossbody bag or small backpack that closes
- Phone power bank. You'll use maps and transit apps all day.
- Compact umbrella
- Refillable water bottle
- Contactless card or phone wallet. You can tap to pay at subway turnstiles.

What to wear at the famous spots
- Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island: the ferry is windy and cold even on mild days. Bring a layer. Security for the ferry is like airport security, so pack your day bag light.
- Central Park: it's huge. Good shoes, water, and sun protection in summer.
- Observation decks: colder and windier at the top than in the street.
- Broadway: there's no dress code, but theaters are often cool inside.

Will your bag fit the flight?
Most major US airlines, including American, Delta, United, JetBlue and Southwest, allow a carry-on of 22 x 14 x 9 inches on their main fares. Low-cost airlines like Frontier, Allegiant and Breeze charge for a full-size carry-on and include only a small personal item.
A bag that fits every North American airline we track is **21.7 x 13.8 x 9 in (55 x 35 x 22.86 cm)**.
Check your own bag with the bag size checker, see the US carry-on rules, or compare personal item sizes if you want to travel with just a small bag.
Quick tips
- Break in your shoes before the trip. Blisters end city trips early.
- Dress in layers. Subways can be hot even in winter, and shops are cold in summer.
- Leave room in your bag. New York shopping is hard to resist.
