How airlines measure checked bags
Most airlines don't limit each side of a checked bag. They add the three sides together: length + width + height, called linear inches or linear cm. The common limit is 62 inches (158 cm). A bag of 30 x 20 x 12 inches is 62 in total and just fits; 31 x 21 x 13 is 65 and counts as oversize.
Weight is separate. The usual economy allowance is 23 kg (50 lb) a bag, with a fee for anything over, and many airlines won't take a bag over 32 kg (70 lb) at all. Budget fares often include no checked bag, so check what your fare includes before you pack for it.

What is the maximum size for a checked bag?
For most airlines it's 158 cm or 62 inches in total, adding length, width and height, wheels and handles included. 28 of the 37 airlines we track with a published checked bag size use that limit. A few budget airlines, like Ryanair and Wizz Air, set a maximum for each side instead.
What is the weight limit for a checked bag?
Usually 23 kg (50 lb) per bag in economy: 30 of the 39 airlines we track use it. Heavier bags pay an overweight fee, and 22 of them refuse any single bag over 32 kg (70 lb).
Is a 28-inch suitcase too big to check?
Usually not. A typical 28-inch suitcase is about 28 x 19 x 12 inches, around 59 inches in total, under the common 62-inch limit. Suitcases of 30 inches and up often go over 62 inches once you add the wheels and handles, so measure yours.
Do wheels and handles count toward the checked bag size?
Yes. Airlines measure the outside of the bag, including wheels, handles and anything sticking out. A suitcase sold as 28 inches can measure 29 or 30 inches tall with its wheels.
