The 7 kg Carry-On Limit: Who Weighs Bags and How to Pack
Which airlines cap cabin bags at 7 kg, whether it's per bag or combined, who actually weighs them, and how to fit a week of stuff under the limit.

If you mostly fly in the US, carry-on weight is something you never think about. Then you book a flight in Australia or Southeast Asia, read the fine print, and see it: 7 kg (about 15 lb). For everything.
It sounds impossible at first. It isn't. Lots of people travel for weeks on 7 kg. But you do have to plan for it, because the bag itself eats a big chunk, and on some airlines your "personal item" counts too.
Short version: know whether your 7 kg is one bag or two bags combined, start with a light soft bag, wear your heaviest clothes and shoes on the plane, and if you're over, buy extra weight online before you get to the airport. Add up your bag in the carry-on weight calculator before you pack.
Which airlines have a 7 kg limit?
A lot of them, especially in Asia, Oceania and the Middle East. But "7 kg" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere. The big question is what the 7 kg covers. Here's what each airline's own website says for Economy:
| Airline | What the 7 kg covers |
|---|---|
| AirAsia | Two items (a cabin bag plus a laptop bag or handbag) combined |
| VietJet | Main bag and small item combined, depending on fare and route |
| Jetstar | Two items combined (flights before 2 February 2027, see below) |
| Qantas | International Economy: overhead bag and personal item, 7 kg maximum |
| Singapore Airlines | One cabin bag, plus one small extra item like a handbag or laptop bag |
| Air New Zealand | One carry-on, plus one small personal item |
| Emirates | One carry-on; no separate personal item listed for Economy |
| Qatar Airways | One piece |
The combined ones are the ones that trip people up. On AirAsia, VietJet and Jetstar, your laptop bag isn't a free extra. It goes on the scale with everything else.
A few details worth knowing:
- Qantas domestic is different. On Australian domestic flights, Qantas now allows Economy an overhead bag, an underseat bag and a personal item up to 14 kg total, with no single item over 10 kg. The 7 kg cap applies to International Economy and to its Dash 8 Q400 QantasLink flights.
- Jetstar is changing. According to the Qantas page that lists Jetstar's rules, flights before 2 February 2027 allow 7 kg across two items. From 2 February 2027, Jetstar moves to a size-based setup: the overhead bag comes with Priority Carry-on, and no single bag can weigh over 10 kg. Check your booking for which rules apply.
- Singapore Airlines limits the main bag by total size too: length + width + height can't be over 115 cm. The extra item (handbag, laptop bag, camera bag and similar) can be up to 40 x 30 x 10 cm.
For sizes, here's what Asian airlines publish:
| Airline | Country | Size limit | Weight | Carry-on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AirAsia | Malaysia | 56 x 36 x 23 cm about 22 x 14.2 x 9.1 in | 7 kg (15 lb) | Included |
| Vietjet Air | Vietnam | 56 x 36 x 23 cm about 22 x 14.2 x 9.1 in | 7 kg (15 lb) | Included |
| Vietnam Airlines | Vietnam | 56 x 36 x 23 cm about 22 x 14.2 x 9.1 in | — | Included |
| ANA (All Nippon Airways) | Japan | 55 x 40 x 25 cm about 21.7 x 15.7 x 9.8 in | 10 kg (22 lb) | Included |
| Japan Airlines (JAL) | Japan | 55 x 40 x 25 cm about 21.7 x 15.7 x 9.8 in | 10 kg (22 lb) | Included |
| Singapore Airlines | Singapore | 115 cm total 45.3 in total | 7 kg (15 lb) | Included |
And the full list, including airlines with 8, 10 and 12 kg limits, is on our carry-on weight limits page. Budget airlines like Scoot and Cebu Pacific aren't in our data yet, so check their own sites.
Do they actually weigh it?
The honest answer: sometimes. It depends on the airline, the airport, how full the flight is, and frankly who's at the desk.
Here's what the airlines themselves say:
- Singapore Airlines says it checks cabin bags at check-in and again before boarding. Bags over the limit at the gate go in the hold.
- Qantas says it will check your carry-on, and if it's over, you'll have to check it in.
- VietJet puts a carry-on label on your bag at the check-in counter (bags without one are refused) and says it may re-check weight and size at the boarding gate.
And here's what travelers report, which is all over the place:
- Jetstar in Australia keeps coming up as one that weighs carry-ons at the gate and tags them once they've passed. People who fly it a lot call it strict.
- VietJet and airlines in the Philippines get a lot of "very strict" replies, with people describing scales at check-in and at the gate. Others say they flew VietJet internationally and nobody weighed anything.
- AirAsia is the most mixed. Some travelers say they flew AirAsia again and again with 8 or 9 kg and nobody weighed anything. Others say they were stopped. A common observation: agents tend to pick out people pulling roller bags and leave small backpacks alone.
- One traveler said a trip to Australia was what finally made them pack light, because Qantas actually weighed their carry-on.
So don't plan on luck. Plenty of people get through overweight, sure. But if you're the one who gets stopped, the fee at the gate is almost always worse than buying weight online.

Your bag eats your allowance
This is the part that gets people. A typical hard-shell roller weighs 3 kg or more empty. The Away Carry-On, for example, is listed at 7.5 lb, about 3.4 kg. That's nearly half your 7 kg gone before you pack a sock.
A travel backpack is lighter, but not weightless. The Osprey Farpoint 40 is listed at about 1.5 kg. One person on r/onebag worked out their Farpoint was already 22% of their allowance. Lots of simple 20–30 L packs weigh around 1 kg or less, and that kilo or two you save is real stuff you get to bring.
Our bag pages list the empty weight of every bag we cover, so you can compare.
The other thing travelers notice: a 40 L bag is often too big for a 7 kg trip. You'll hit the weight limit long before you fill it. A smaller, lighter bag usually works better.
Wear the heavy stuff
Clothes you're wearing don't get weighed. This is the oldest trick there is, and it works:
- Shoes: wear your heaviest pair. Hiking boots or sneakers on your feet, flip-flops in the bag.
- Layers: jeans or trousers, a hoodie, a jacket. Even in hot places, the plane is cold.
- Pockets: a jacket with big pockets can hold a phone, power bank, cables, a book. Some travelers swear by travel vests with a dozen pockets for exactly this.

Don't go too far. Stuffing several kilos into your clothes to get past a scale and then repacking at the gate is a real thing people do, but gate staff have seen it, and on some airlines the scale is right at the boarding door.
Buy extra weight before you fly
If you know you'll be over, pay for it in advance. It's cheaper, and you stop worrying. What the airlines offer:
- AirAsia: Xtra Carry-On. AirAsia says it raises your cabin allowance to 14 kg when pre-booked. It's limited per flight, so book it early.
- Jetstar: +7 kg extra carry-on. On flights before 2 February 2027, Jetstar sells a +7 kg add-on on selected routes, for 14 kg total, with your main item up to 10 kg. Jetstar says it won't be sold for flights from 2 February 2027.
- VietJet: Priority Carry-on 2 kg. For Eco and Deluxe fares. On domestic flights, VietJet lists it at 230,000 VND if you add it within 24 hours of booking, against 350,000 VND at the airport. Online purchase closes 3 hours before departure.
- Qantas: there's no extra carry-on to buy, but every Qantas flight includes checked baggage. If you're over, just check the bag.
Not sure if you'll be over? Weigh it at home with a cheap luggage scale, or plug your items into the weight calculator and see your total against each airline.
An example of a 7 kg bag
This is just an example to show how the weight adds up, using rough typical weights. It's not a packing list for a specific trip. Weigh your own stuff, because it varies a lot:
| Item | Rough weight |
|---|---|
| Soft backpack, empty | 1.0 kg |
| Clothes for a week (4 tops, 2 shorts, 1 trousers, underwear, socks, swimwear) | 2.0 kg |
| Light laptop | 1.3 kg |
| Laptop charger | 0.3 kg |
| Phone charger, cables, small power bank | 0.4 kg |
| Toiletries in travel sizes | 0.6 kg |
| Flip-flops | 0.3 kg |
| Light rain jacket | 0.3 kg |
| Sunglasses, meds, documents, small extras | 0.4 kg |
| Total | 6.6 kg |
Worn on the plane, not weighed: sneakers, jeans, a hoodie.
Now swap the soft backpack for a 3.4 kg hard-shell roller. Same stuff, 9 kg. That's the whole problem in one number.
Mistakes people make
- Thinking the personal item is free. On AirAsia, VietJet and Jetstar (before February 2027), it's part of the 7 kg.
- Forgetting the way home. You leave at 6.5 kg and come back with souvenirs, snacks and a bottle of something. Leave a kilo of room, or plan to check a bag on the return.
- Shopping after check-in. Your bag passed at the desk, then you bought duty-free and a few souvenirs, and the gate has a scale. It happens.
- Underestimating tech. A laptop, its charger, a power bank, cables and a camera can easily be 2–3 kg. A smaller, lighter charger helps more than you'd think.
- Packing for the strictest flight last. On connecting trips, Qantas says it plainly: pack for the lowest allowance on your journey. A 10 kg bag on your long-haul is a problem on the 7 kg connection.
- Full-size toiletries. Liquids are heavy. Travel sizes, solid shampoo and buying sunscreen there all help.
- Putting power banks in a bag you might have to check. They generally can't go in the hold. If your bag gets sent to the hold at the gate, take them out first.
If your bag does get stopped, our guide to what happens when your carry-on is too big at the gate walks through your options. And the gate card puts your airline's official limit and source page on your phone, in case there's any argument about what the rule actually is.
Check your bag's size too
Weight is only half of it. The bag still has to fit the airline's size:
Will your bag fit?
Measure with wheels, handles and pockets included. The order of the sides doesn't matter.
For a whole trip with several airlines, the trip checker finds one bag size that works for all of them, and the packing list builder helps you trim the list before you weigh anything.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 7 kg limit per bag or combined?
It depends on the airline. AirAsia, VietJet and Jetstar (on flights before 2 February 2027) count your cabin bag and small personal item together toward 7 kg. Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand set 7 kg for the main carry-on and allow a small extra item. Emirates and Qatar Airways list one 7 kg piece for Economy.
Do airlines actually weigh carry-on bags?
Some do, some don't, and it varies by airport and flight. Singapore Airlines says it checks bags at check-in and before boarding, and VietJet says it may re-check at the gate. Travelers often report weighing on Jetstar and on airlines in Vietnam and the Philippines, while AirAsia experiences are mixed.
Is 7 kg enough for a week?
Yes, for most people, especially in warm places. Use a light soft bag, pack about a week of light clothes, plan on doing laundry and wear your heaviest shoes and layers on the plane. A heavy laptop or hard-shell suitcase is what usually pushes people over.
How much does an empty carry-on weigh?
A hard-shell roller is usually around 3 to 4 kg empty, softside rollers often a bit less, and soft backpacks about 1 to 1.5 kg. Check the listed weight before you buy. Our bag pages show the empty weight of each bag.
Can I buy extra carry-on weight?
On some airlines, yes. AirAsia's Xtra Carry-On raises the cabin allowance to 14 kg when pre-booked, Jetstar sells a +7 kg add-on on selected routes for flights before 2 February 2027, and VietJet sells a 2 kg Priority Carry-on for Eco and Deluxe fares. Buying online is cheaper than at the airport.
Does Qantas have a 7 kg carry-on limit?
On International Economy, yes: an overhead bag and a personal item up to 7 kg. On Australian domestic flights, Qantas allows up to 14 kg total across an overhead bag, an underseat bag and a personal item, with no single item over 10 kg, except on Dash 8 Q400 QantasLink flights, which are 7 kg.
